Ngo calls for political will to reduce road accidents, fatalities

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 — Non-governmental organisation Alliance For A Safe Community (Ikatan) has called for a sound political will by the government on overall road safety measures to reduce traffic accidents and high number of fatalities throughout the year by communicating effectively.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the government should also raise awareness among the masses via enforcement, education and engagement with stakeholders.

“Ikatan is deeply concerned that road accidents in 2023 recorded the loss of 6,433 lives, the highest in the last five years and higher than 6,284 deaths recorded on the roads in 2018.

“The increase of seven per cent in road deaths last year compared to the 2022 death statistics was a clear indication that commitment, focus and willingness of the federal government to reduce accidents and fatalities on the road had failed,” he said in a statement today.

Lee also suggested that the Transport Ministry rethink the communication measures and campaign messages on road safety advocacy and awareness via the Road Transport Department (JPJ) alongside the police.

“The Transport Ministry should conduct consistent and serious communication throughout the year at all levels with relevant stakeholders as outlined in the National Road Safety Plan 2022-2030,” he said, adding that the Transport Ministry should request the cooperation of all ministries, agencies, and government-linked companies to undertake safety steps for their workforce including the use of rear seat belts and safety helmets during commuting hours.

Among others, he said a special communication task force team should be set up for each of the top five ‘worst’ districts in Malaysia with the highest annual road deaths recorded.

“Transformation of the role and function of National Road Safety Council should become the focal point of communication in every state. There should be engagement with local communities especially the parents of young motorcyclists via consistent outreach programmes.

“Hence, it is our fervent hope that the government would recapture its commitment and focus on saving lives on the road with a clear communication plan throughout the year,” he added.
