SHAH ALAM, Jan 29 — The state government has allocated RM85,000 to 17 single mothers’ associations to support its members’ entrepreneurial programmes and skill enhancement.
State executive councillor for women’s development Anfaal Saari said the grant under the Mekar Kasih programmes is one of the state administration’s efforts to empower this social group.
“The state government, via Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WBS), consistently implements programmes to improve single mothers’ living standards. Therefore, we agree to provide a RM5,000 grant to each of the 17 single mothers’ associations.
“We hope that through this grant, opportunities for education and entrepreneurial training can be provided to single mothers interested in improving their living standards and that of their families,” she said.
Anfaal was speaking at the Jalinan Kasih dan Bicara Santai hi-tea and casual talk, at Hotel Mardhiyyah today.
The inaugural event was attended by about 200 guests, including single mothers, Pusat Wanita Berdaya (PWB) representatives from each state constituency, academics, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
It aims to create a two-way dialogue to discuss issues related to women’s rights, gender equality, and the socio-economic development of women in Selangor and in Malaysia overall.
The meeting also provides a platform and opportunity to hear views and suggestions from Anfaal herself regarding women’s development policies and programmes.
