Taman Sri Muda’s drainage system upgrading works near completion

SHAH ALAM, Jan 17 — Upgrading works on the drainage system in Taman Seri Muda here, which was severely affected by the 2021 catastrophic flood, are almost completed.

Kota Kemuning assemblyman S. Preakas said the works, which have reached 90 per cent completion, have had a positive impact on the township, mitigating the severity of recent floods.

He said his team is constantly monitoring the progress of the construction of a new storm drain, as well as the cleaning of existing drains, which are expected to be fully ready by January 24.

“However, we have received reports of rising water and flash floods in several locations. As such, we have to double our efforts, including implementing short term solutions like cleaning the drains at Lot 1325, Jalan Batu Lapan to ensure smooth flow of rain water.

“I also urge residents to always ensure their houses are clean and to conduct gotong-royong to avoid further flash floods,” he said when contacted.

Previously on December 11, Preakas had said that works to upgrade the drainage system in Taman Sri Muda, with a cost of RM6.8 million, is meant to address the issue of flooding in the area.

The primary scope of the project involves the protection of nearby riverbanks, installation of screw pumps and construction of a compact substation.

In the 2021 flooding, Sri Muda was among the worst hit, with over a dozen recorded deaths and millions of ringgit in damage.

The flood was regarded as one of the worst natural disasters in Malaysia’s recent history, killing at least 50 and displacing over 125,000 people.
