Azizulhasni wins UCI Nations Cup gold in Adelaide

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 — National cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang has proven he will be a strong contender at the Paris Olympics 2024 when he won the men’s keirin title at the UCI Nations Cup championships in Adelaide, Australia today.

In the race at the Super-Drome, Azizulhasni, nicknamed The Pocket Rocketman, beat off a strong challenge from Japan’s Shinji Nakano and Kaiya Ota to clinch his first gold this year.

The win has boosted his standing in the race to Paris as the UCI Cup offers Olympic qualification points.

The 36-year-old cyclist finished third in the semi-finals to qualify for the final round.

However, his teammate Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis failed to complete the race in the repechage round after finishing heat two in the second spot in the keirin.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh congratulated Azizulhasni for his success.

“Datuk Azizulhasni Awang has just won the keirin gold at the Tissot UCI Nations Cup Championships in Adelaide, Australia. Congratulations! #RoadToGold,” she said in her post on X (formerly Twitter).
