SHAH ALAM, Feb 29 — Subang Jaya state assemblyman Michelle Ng Mei Sze is urging the state government to reevaluate its building design policy by requiring new properties to incorporate facilities which caters to vulnerable groups.
The DAP lawmaker said this is vital for family development and aligns with the spirit of the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).
“As a mother, I cannot even count how many times I have had to breastfeed in a restroom, change my baby’s diaper on unsuitable toilet surfaces, or use poorly located nursing rooms.
“I suggest the design standards for new buildings which will be constructed in the future be reviewed to be friendly towards women, children, and disabled persons.
“As for old buildings, I propose the state government formulate an incentive or scheme that provides free expert consultation for building modifications,” she said during the State Legislative Assembly session today.
Ng was debating the royal address delivered by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, during the opening of the First Meeting of the Second Session of the 15th State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (February 27).
His Royal Highness reminded the assembly that RS-1 must be implemented according to the set timeline, particularly initiatives and programmes involving the people’s welfare.
The Ruler said RS-1 is crucial in ensuring Selangor’s economy remains firm and competitive over the next five years.
RS-1, which was launched in July 2022, encompasses four strategic themes, namely strengthening the economy, ensuring social inclusivity and the people’s well-being, driving environmental sustainability, and providing good and effective governance.
