SHAH ALAM, Feb 10 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) will be organising an eco free market themed ‘Back to School’, in conjunction with its Car-Free Day event at Dataran Kemerdekaan, Seksyen 14 on February 18.
Its corporate and public relations director Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif said the programme is meant to help reduce the burden on low-income families in preparing school necessities and equipment for their children ahead of the 2024 school session.
“Among the contributions are school uniforms, bags, cloth, as well as other basic necessities like rice, oil, flour, and sugar.
“Through this programme, visitors only need to exchange old recyclable items such as water bottles, glass bottles, aluminium cans, and old newspapers to receive coupons that would enable them to obtain goods on offer at the event,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Azhar said the programme in collaboration with BeKind Malaysia and non-governmental organisation Suri Rumah Rahmah Malaysia will involve 82 donors.
The programme also serves as a platform for the community to participate in charitable activities by giving out essential items for free.
“It also fosters and educates the public on the practice of recycling in their daily lives, aligning with the sustainable development goals (SDG), specifically on eradicating poverty (SDG 1) and ensuring sustainable communities and cities (SDG 11),” he said.
