KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 — The Energy Transition and Renewable Energy Ministry had in 2022 implemented several short-term initiatives or projects to address the flood issues in Bangi, with a sum of RM598,000.

Its deputy minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that the initiatives include strengthening and stabilising the banks of Sungai Long in Hulu Langat, and similar efforts along Sungai Sering and Sunway Cheras.

He said the works also include along the banks of Sungai Langat and in Taman Sri Indah, Balakong Cheras.

“In the event of an emergency, we are prepared to carry out required tasks tailored to the specific requirements,” he said in response to a supplementary question from Bangi MP Shahredzan Johan on maintenance works conducted and the ministry’s strategies to enhance efficiency and reduce flooding risks in Bangi.

Shahredzan also requested the ministry to provide a comprehensive inventory list of rivers, ponds, ditches, and drains in Bangi under the supervision of the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), along with other detailed information, such as location, length, and width.

In response, Fadillah said the main rivers in Bangi are Sungai Langat, which stretches across 42 kilometres from the border of Sepang to Jalan Reko with 90 tributaries of over 35 kilometres in length, and a 37.25-kilometre stretch of Sungai Klang that has nine tributaries with a combined length of 37 kilometres.

“There are 98 flood retention ponds with a total area of 58.81 hectares. Out of this total, 18 ponds are supervised by the JPS, while the remaining are supervised by local authorities and other agencies.

“All these ponds have the potential to be upgraded to increase their capacity as a component of flood control mechanisms,” said Fadillah.
