“Lampu Jalan Kampung” LED street lights project to commence this year

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 — The Rural and Regional Development Ministry will implement the ‘Lampu Jalan Kampung’ solar LED street lights project this year.

Its deputy minister Datuk Rubiah Wang said they are presently in the process of collecting data on the requirements and potential locations for the installation, with plans to commence the project in the fourth quarter of this year.

“Eligible areas include rural and outskirts of urban areas, as well as Orang Asli villages. Villages under the Felda scheme, areas beyond local authorities’s jurisdiction, housing estates, and resettlement areas developed by private entities or individuals are excluded.

“Areas without electricity or grid systems, remote areas with limited access to machinery for installation and maintenance, or roads without utility sources within at least 100 metres are also eligible,” she said during the Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Rubiah was responding to Jerantut MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin’s query on the proposal to install solar street lights on roads under the ministry’s purview.

She added the lights will also be installed along village main roads, with priority given to the entrance of public buildings including community halls, places of worship, public spaces, and intersections.

“Currently, the number of installations allowed does not exceed 40 units per village. They will be installed at reasonable intervals, with the final number depending on the existing number of conventional street lights,” Rubiah said.
