SHAH ALAM, March 5 — The Selangor government is considering enacting a specific law to regulate the homestay industry amid concerns raised by local communities regarding public nuisance caused by these premises.
State executive councillor for tourism and local government Ng Suee Lim said while the increasing demand for homestays in many districts is encouraging, he also recognises the complaints from locals regarding various forms of pollution associated with these businesses.
Ng, however, said there is a need for engagements with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) and a review of existing land laws by local authorities before a new legislation can be formulated.
“Tourism Selangor, along with the state government, will conduct research with Motac to address this issue, either through a state enactment or guidelines.
“Having said that, it is not an easy task as it involves the local authorities and land use rights,” he said in the State Legislative Assembly today, while expressing desire to further develop the homestay industry.
Ng also pointed out that the state government could not simply force these businesses to shut down, adding that discussions and collaborations with relevant stakeholders will be crucial in finding solutions that balance the interests of all parties.
He was responding to a supplementary question by Kajang assemblyman Cheong Kian Young on the state government’s plans to regulate the industry following grouses from local communities.
Earlier, Ng said the state has engaged in various initiatives, including conducting market research, infrastructure development and event planning, to boost the tourism sector ahead of the upcoming Visit Selangor Year 2025.
