Sultan of Selangor commends Goodyear for its contribution to the state

SHAH ALAM, March 14 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has commended global tyre manufacturer Goodyear for its contribution to the Selangor and Malaysian economy and automotive sector over the past five decades

His Royal Highness made the statement following the announcement of the closure of Goodyear’s Shah Alam plant in June this year, after being in operation for 52 years.

In a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page today, the ruler said as one of the world’s top tyre manufacturing companies, Goodyear Malaysia had achieved excellent performance in both sales and technology.

Sultan Sharafuddin said the company became the first Goodyear tyre plant to be certified for ISO 9002 standards in 1992, before obtaining the QS9000 and ISO14001 certifications in 2002, followed by the ISO / TS 16949 certification in 2003.

He said Goodyear tyres were fitted in Malaysia’s first locally produced car – Proton Saga – back in 1985, and were chosen for the Ford Model T in 1908, the world’s first mass-affordable automobile.

According to the post, Sultan Selangor, during his 1997 and 2007 road expeditions on the Peking To Paris Challenge from Beijing to Paris and 2015 Road to Mandalay Rally, also used Goodyear tyres on his 1932 Ford Model B, 1940 Chevrolet Fangio Coupe and 1956 Jaguar XK140 FHC.

“Throughout this 16,000km and 8,400km journies across terrains including desert, snow and cobbled roads, DYMM Tuanku and his co-driver Dato’ Richard Curtis did not encounter a single puncture with the Goodyear tyres,” the post added, while sharing some pictures of the road expeditions.
