Hoorah for pedestrians: Upgrade to Phileo Damansara MRT station’s accessway soon

By Danial Dzulkifly

SHAH ALAM, April 16 — Commuters travelling to and from the Phileo Damansara Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station can anticipate improved accessibility with major enhancements to the station’s pedestrian infrastructure soon.

In a series of Facebook posts yesterday, urban safety advocacy group Bike Commute Malaysia revealed significant progress in its efforts to develop safer and more accessible pathways for pedestrians heading to the station.

The group, along with the help of Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, have conducted several meetings with the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and its mayor Aznan Hassan, to press for several major improvements for the accessway.

It also shared several illustrations of what the improved pedestrian routes would look like, which they have worked on since last year with the support of Lee and his team.

“These images were made to advocate for the need for improved pedestrian facilities at this site and to create buy-in from relevant stakeholders.

“We anticipate the project to be carried out in phases and at different times. The advocacy process has been interesting and we hope that the project can be implemented as best as it can be,” Bike Commute Malaysia said.

It added that the images should only be used as illustrative references, and do not necessarily reflect the project’s final outcome.

The illustrations shared include the proposed improvements along Jalan 16/11 to Jalan 16/15 in Section 16, Petaling Jaya.

The improvements will see safer pathways for residents coming from the surrounding area, including those from Section 17.

However, the advocacy group did not provide an exact date for the project’s commencement or completion.

Previously, in February last year, Lee said that he would recommend MBPJ upgrade the pavement and road at the Phileo Damansara station, particularly as the current one is not disabled persons-friendly.

“I will talk to MBPJ to suggest upgrades and we will see what we can do to improve the situation for everyone,” he said.
