SHAH ALAM AUG 17: Nine non-governmental organisations (NGO) have urged for police cooperation to allow the #TangkapMO1 rally to be conducted in a peaceful and safe manner on August 27 in accordance to their rights contained in Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.
In a joint media statement, the NGOs gave full support for the rally that focuses on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal and the negative economic and political impact on the country.
“We, who are part of the civil society, welcome the initiative shown by the students who have organised the #TangkapMO1 rally out of concern of the country’s future,” the statement said.
It added that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) had previously exposed the theft of billions of ringgit in 1MDB funds by various individuals including high ranking public officials.
The freedom of peaceful assembly is a right guaranteed for all Malaysian citizens under the Federal Constitution and it includes youth and students, the statement read.
“We also condemn the arrest of Ariffin Amin by the UiTM Auxiliary Police yesterday,” it said.
Ariffin Amin is an activist from the Student Progressive Front and was arrested for organising a session regarding the 1MDB issue and the DOJ expose involving an unknown individual identified as Malaysian Official 1.
The nine NGOs that issued the statement are SUARAM, Bersih 2.0, Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4), Pusat KOMAS, Lawyers for Liberty, Persatuan Kebangsaan Hak Asasi Manusia (HAKAM), Association of Women Lawyers (AWL), Empower and IKRAM.
