SHAH ALAM, OCT 24: Contamination in Semenyih River Water Treatment Plant allegedly stemmed from Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.
Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Exco Elizabeth Wong said in a statement that an unusual odour came from the waterways upstream in Nilai that flowed into Buah River, heading towards Semenyih.
“Selangor Water Management Authority (SWMA) sent two river monitoring teams to track the smell along Buah River on the morning of October 23, to identify the source of contamination.
“The National Water Service Commission (SPAN) monitoring team also joined the other teams in the afternoon of October 23. At 4 pm, the river water still smelled and all efforts to find the source of contamination are in progress.
“The contamination in the river is confirmed as originating from Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Dead fish were also seen in the river area,” she said.
Elizabeth said that they have informed the Negeri Sembilan Environmental Department via the Selangor Environmental Department and Selangor Water Management Authority.
She said that due to the contamination, areas such as Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang experienced water supply disruptions, as the treatment plant was forced to close down after the water contamination occurred at 7.30 am on October 23.
Main areas that experienced water supply disruption were as follows:
- Hulu Langat district: Bangi, Bandar Bukit Mahkota, Kajang, Semenyih and Rinching
- Kuala Langat district: Morib, Banting, Bandar Saujana Putra, Bandar Rimbayu and Telok Panglima Garang
- Petaling district: USJ 1- 27, Puchong, Seri Kembangan and Serdang
- Sepang district: Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and Bandar Nusa Putra
- Heights, Pulau Meranti, Kota Warisan, Bandar Bukit Puchong and Sungai Merab
