SHAH ALAM, MAR 2: Sugar prices was reported to have increased by 11 cents per kilogramme effective yesterday although no official announcement has been made.
That has been verified by Malaysian Federal Retailers Association President, Hong Chee Meng, reported Malaysiakini.
He said the matter was informed by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry through Whatsapp.
“I was notified at about 3 pm through Whatsapp. No official letter,” he said.
Chee Meng also described the increase as moderate since the last time that price increased for sugar, it was as much as RM0.20 per kilogramme.
Due to that, a kilo of sugar now costs RM2.95 which is a four percent increase since the last price adjustment in 2013.
Meanwhile, according to Oriental Daily, the increase is caused by sugar price increase in the international market in addition to ringgit depreciation.
Bahau Assemblyman, Chew Seh Yong claimed to have received complaints from the public since early yesterday morning concerning the sugar price increase.
“Upon being briefed by related parties, it was finally confirmed that government had agreed to the 11 cents-per-kilogramme increase.
“Several retailers have started selling at the new price while some will only increase their prices upon government’s announcement,” he said to the newspaper.
