SHAH ALAM, March 23 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been urged to investigate the attempt by a senior minister who was alleged to have blackmailed parliament members to quit their party.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim alleged that pressure has been put on opposition members to switch sides for the ruling party to stay in power.
“Corruption and power abuse are critical issues because these are the determining factors that decide the rise and downfall of the race, depending on our determination and commitment to protest against it.
“The MACC should be given the freedom and trust that it is an independent body with the integrity as well as the ability to investigate corruption cases without fear of favour,” Anwar wrote on his Facebook page.
Yesterday, Anwar held a meeting with MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki to convey and voice out concerns on abuse of power.
Previously, PKR had alleged attempts by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government to coerce opposition members into switching sides.
The statement was issued in response to Kuala Langat MP Dr Xavier Jayakumar’s decision to leave the party on March 13 and throw his support behind the PN government.
