Luas intensify river basins monitoring to avoid water disruption during Aidilfitri

SHAH ALAM, May 12 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) has stepped up its round-the-clock monitoring operation at river basins to ensure no water pollution incidents occur during the Aidilfitri celebrations.

The agency in a statement today said the 24-hour effort aims to avoid the shutdown of water treatment plants (WTPs) as well as disruption of water supply during the festival and during the movement control order (MCO) period.

“The non-stop monitoring operations are carried out by Luas Rapid Squad at sensitive areas in the basins of Sungai Selangor, Sungai Langat and Sungai Klang, as well as state dams.

“Luas also conducts static monitoring (in-situ sampling) in identified risky strategic areas, as well as perform periodic sampling such as cleanliness studies in river basins to monitor water quality status more effectively.

The statement said the agency is also ready to perform the Pumping Operation from Alternative Ponds to Selangor River (OPAK), Hybrid off River Augmentation System (HORAS) 600 and ‘off-river storage’ (ORS) in Bestari Jaya in case of emergencies.

“It aims to channel water as an additional source to help speed up control and mitigation measures in the event of an unwanted incident,” the agency explained.
