Selangor, OUM to continue cooperation in providing lifelong education to women

SHAH ALAM, July 13 — The state government will continue its strategic collaboration with the Open University Malaysia (OUM) to make the Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WDS) Scholarship for Cohort Two a success.

Menteri Besar’s political secretary Juwairiya Zulkifli said the joint venture was in line with the goal to improve the socio-economy of women as well as increase their participation in leadership and as decision-makers.

She informed that they have partnered with the private institution of higher learning since last year to realise the lifelong education agenda among women in the state.

“We will achieve that objective through the lifelong education programme offered by OUM. OUM enables education to be taken up by all members in the community, especially individuals with careers and families,” Juwairiya said when delivering Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari’s speech on his behalf yesterday.

The speech was read out during the presentation of the Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WDS) Scholarship for Cohort Two, at the Shah Alam Convention Centre.

She said OUM had succeeded in introducing a new paradigm of mass, global and continuous education in line with the term lifelong education.

“This (new concept of education) opens up a wider opportunity and space for every member of the community to continue their studies,” she said.

Juwairiya, who is also the Bukit Melawati state assemblyman, said that the allocation of RM200,000 a year for the scholarship is a long-term investment to continue to empower women.

“The sponsorship involves diploma, bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes to increase the number of women with higher education qualifications in the state,” she added.
