Luas: Modern drone used to monitor hotspots to curb contamination of rivers

By Mustakim Ramli

SHAH ALAM, July 14 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) utilises the high-tech and industrial-grade DJI Matrice 300 RTK drone to monitor sensitive water resources as part of its effort to prevent the risk of contamination.

The agency said the use of the cutting-edge drone in monitoring 31 hotspots in Sungai Selangor, Sungai Langat and Sungai Semenyih both during the day and night is managed by Aerodyne Geospatial Sdn Bhd, which is a subsidiary of the world’s leading drone services provider Aerodyne Group.

“The DJI Matrice 300 RTK has the ability to spot changes or suspicious activities that is taking place in the area.

“Surveillance using an unmanned aerial vehicle with Luas would also be activated in the event of a river pollution incident, which is code yellow or red,” Luas said on Facebook.

According to the agency, code yellow indicates the risk of a water treatment plant (WTP) suspension while red indicates the cease of WTP operations.

The Luas Rapid Squad (Skuad Pantas) had begun using drones to monitor trespassers or river contamination activities in Selangor since November 2020.

On October 21, 2020, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari stated the technology could fly over 1,000 kilometres per month and be equipped with applications to analyse water quality and detect factory operations that could potentially lead to pollution.
