SHAH ALAM, Oct 28 — Pakatan Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has today announced it is fielding 72 candidates to contest the parliamentary seats in Peninsular Malaysia, for the upcoming 15th general election.
Several prominent state leaders who will contest for federal seats for the first time include Selangor PKR chairman Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, who is also the Menteri Besar and incumbent Sungai Tua state assemblyman, as well as state executive councillor for housing cum Batu Tiga state assemblyman Rodziah Ismail.
“Tonight, the candidates we announce are just candidates for PKR parliamentary seats only. It is not all of them, we have more names that we will announce later on,” said PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his speech before the announcement was made at Padang MPAJ in Taman Kosas, Ampang earlier tonight, which was also broadcasted live.
He added working to select candidates is never easy and involves a complicated process.
“We have chosen from the ranks of old and new fighters. We have many who are talented and capable and unfortunately, we even have to drop some who have contributed a lot to the party.
“But there must be a transition of power, there must be regeneration and the same person cannot stay forever,” Anwar said.
The inucmbent Port Dickson MP reminded the nominated candidates to be grateful and remember their good fortune to have been chosen.
“You need to fight not for positions or to become a minister, but fight because of your promises and oaths to defend the fate of the people as a whole.
“This is a good reminder to repent and learn from experience,” he said.
The candidates were called up to the stage in groups of ten, where they had to sign three documents.
These include a bond of loyalty to be faithful to PKR and the people, an agreement to return the nomination deposit money for their seats if they win their respective seats, as well as an agreement to take a cut in their allowances as representatives if they win.
Prior to the dissolution of Parliament on October 10, PKR holds 36 parliamentary seats.
