TusStar-SITEC partnership sends top ten winning teams from Selangor Accelerator Programme to TsingHua University in August

9 July 2018, Setia Alam – Selangor’s first accelerator programme announced the top ten winners last Saturday after participating in a demo day at the Top Glove Tower in Setia Alam.

Officiated by Dato’ Teng Chang Khim, Senior Executive Councillor, State Government of Selangor, the demo day is an important part in the Selangor Accelerator Programme 2018 (SAP 2018), and was presided by a panel of 9 judges, who contributed 70% of the judging score for participants of the programme, whereas 30% of the weight-age included their performance and attendance for aspects of the programme.

The winners will get the opportunity to travel to the leading TsingHua University in China in August, as part of a study trip, on top of pitching opportunities in Beijing and Hangzhou. This was made possible through a collaboration with one of the biggest incubators in the world, TusStar, the incubator arm of TsingHua University, and the Selangor Information Technology & E-Commerce Council (SITEC).

The SAP 2018, launched in April this year, is a four month accelerator programme aimed at making participating startups investor-ready, and is the first ever startup accelerator by the Selangor State Government through their initiative, the Selangor Information Technology & E-Commerce Council (SITEC).

Additionally, the top five of these top ten will automatically enter the Selangor International Pitch, which invites top startups from the APAC region to pitch on stage at the Selangor Smart City & Digital Economy Convention 2018 on 14 September at MITEC.

“This programme is the natural progression for SITEC, after our incubator programme StartupQuest Selangor, which has seen numerous creative and innovative ideas, some of which have also moved on to realise their minimum viable product as a startup. This, in my opinion, is an encouraging sign that the startup community is constantly and proactively looking to grow, learn, and better themselves”, said SITEC Chief Executive Yong Kai Ping at the welcoming speech during the winners’ ceremony.

“In the advent of IR4.0 and the Digital Economy, talented people remain an ever-important resource, but equally important is honing that raw talent, that it can be directed and harnessed to empower the growth and success of Malaysia’s move to the Digital Economy.

Selangor has always been firmly committed to nurturing these talents that bring innovation and progress, and the Selangor Accelerator Programme, which has culminated in its Demo Day today, is but another example of how strongly we believe in progress for the Golden State”, shared YB Dato Teng Chang Khim, in his opening speech.

The event was graced with the presence of Dato’ Hasan Azhari B. Idris, CEO of Invest Selangor, who presented the winners with their prizes, together with Dato’ Teng Chang Khim and Yong Kai Ping
