Malaysia tops regional 11.11 sales in terms of traffic, transaction

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13 — Malaysia recorded the strongest performance among six countries in terms of shopping traffic and numbers of orders during the 11.11 Singles Day online shopping frenzy this year, according to online cashback platform ShopBack Malaysia.

ShopBack Malaysia recorded over 80 per cent growth this year in terms of sales for its partner e-merchants on November 11, 2019, compared to last year’s.

It is estimated that ShopBack Malaysia users have spent around RM20 million for online shopping on Monday, ShopBack Malaysia country general manager Eddy Han said in a statement yesterday.

“The average spending per Malaysian user is around RM217 and the top spender in Malaysia made more than RM30,000 worth of orders with Lenovo via ShopBack.

“It is expected that he will receive more than RM4,500 in cashback with 14 per cent upsized cashback offer on 11/11/2019, after his order gets validated by the partner e-merchant,” he said.

He added that ShopBack studied the preliminary results compiled from over 13 million shoppers regionally with more than two million in Malaysia.

Data gathered in six countries — Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan — showed Malaysia ranked number one in terms of the volume of shopping traffic from both web and app, followed by Thailand and the Philippines.

For Malaysia, the online shopping traffic for Singles Day this year is more than 10 times higher than in 2018.

On a regional level, around 90 per cent of the shopping traffic came from the app.

It is estimated that about 90 per cent of Malaysia’s shopping traffic came from app, Singapore (80 per cent), the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand (all 95 per cent), and Taiwan (70 per cent).

ShopBack said Malaysian shoppers made the highest number of orders on Monday — on average, over 6,000 users were making at least one order via ShopBack Malaysia every hour.

This is at least five times of ShopBack’s normal day in November performance and three times of last year’s November 11.

Malaysia also topped the chart with over 100 orders made per minute, followed by Indonesia (over 90 orders made per minute) and Thailand (over 80 orders made per minute).

Malaysians, Singaporeans, Thais and Filipinos shopped the most right after midnight, with the most popular shopping time belt is during the 12 am–1 am period — a phenomenon encouraged by the exclusive midnight vouchers and discounted deals which is largely popularised by Alibaba’s Taobao and Lazada.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese shoppers were found most active in the last hour (11 pm–12 am) and online shoppers Indonesia shopped the most between 10 pm–11 pm, to make sure they check-out their items before the end of the annual Global Shopping Festival.

The top three popular stores in Malaysia are Lazada, Shopee and Taobao, where ShopBack observed around four to seven times higher volume of shopping traffic flocked to these stores on Monday compared to an average day in November.

On the regional level, both Lazada and Shopee appear in the top three stores for each country.

“ShopBack Malaysia is the first within its APAC (Asia-Pacific) countries that provides cashback to eWallet users when they reload or use it to make payments.

“We believe this help boost our shopping traffic and a large contributor to our orders volume on Monday,” said Han.

Currently, over two million shoppers go through ShopBack web or app before they start their shopping journey.

On November 11, 2018, around RM 11 million worth of sales were made through ShopBack Malaysia in just one day.
