Op Selamat: Four days, 60 deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — A total of 57 fatal accidents were recorded during the four days of Op Selamat 16/2020 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration from Saturday to yesterday, involving 60 deaths.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Azisman Alias ​​said the highest deaths involved motorcyclists and pillion riders.

He said Selangor recorded the highest number of fatal accident cases, namely, 16, followed by Johor (11 cases) and Kedah (nine cases).

“A total of 6,689 accidents were recorded in four days with Selangor (2,119) contributing the highest number of accidents, followed by Johor (1,070) and Kuala Lumpur (763),” he said in a statement here last night.

He said 96,477 summonses were issued, and out of the total, 59,552 summonses or 61.7 per cent involved six major offences, namely, using a mobile phone while driving, flouting traffic lights, driving over speed limits, using emergency lanes, cutting queue and cutting double lines.

The Ops Selamat 16/2020, which was launched on January 18 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration, would continue until February 1.
