Increase in Covid-19 daily cases worrisome, says MB

SHAH ALAM, May 24 — A total of 37 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in Selangor yesterday, compared to the 20 cases registered on Friday.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had on Twitter last night said the rise in infections the past couple of days is worrying.

“The jump in daily cases is worrying. However, according to reports from the Selangor Covid-19 operation centre, 21 out of the 37 new cases had involved the immigration depot in Semenyih (involving foreigners), three from the Sungai Chua market in Kajang and three in Hulu Selangor.

“Another four infections were imported while the remaining six were local transmission,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Task Force for Covid-19 said 25 new infections registered in Hulu Langat had brought the total active cases in the district to 70.

On Friday, Selangor had once again registered a red zone in the state when Hulu Langat recorded a total of 45 active coronavirus cases.

The state had last recorded a red zone on May 18 in the Petaling district with 50 active cases, which has now dropped to 25.

The Health Ministry had yesterday revealed a new Covid-19 cluster involving foreigners at the Immigration Detention Depot (DTI) in Semenyih was identified.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that so far a total of 1,752 samples had been taken from 1,631 detainees and 121 personnel.
