Ops Sumber Air spots oil spill in Sungai Langat, no water disruption

SHAH ALAM, May 4 — Pollution checks by Selangor’s Ops Sumber Air had detected contamination at the raw water source in Sungai Langat that had come from a power plant in Kuala Langat.

Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) said the pollution was spotted near the Labohan Dagang water treatment plant (LRA) at 11.50am yesterday. It said the swift action in spotting the pollution had prevented a water disruption incident from taking place.

“Investigations found that the contamination had originated from the Kuala Langat power plant, which was an oil spill believed to be diesel.

“We were informed by the premise that the oil spill had come from the oil separator machine due to the continuous heavy rain,” Luas said in a statement today. The investigation was carried out with joint efforts by the Department of Environment, Pengurusan Air Selangor, and National Water Commission (Span).

Luas said the power plant had carried out the cleaning operations and will have an oil boom fixed. The cleanup and flushing of the oil spillage by the premise had kept the contamination under control.

“The premise will also use an oil pad and install activated to control the contamination. The prompt action had prevented the Labohan Dagang water treatment plant (LRA) from shutting down, which would have caused water disruption.

“Proactive checks involving the relevant agencies will ensure pollution would not take place, which could disrupt water supply in the state,” the statement read.
