Global coronavirus cases top 1.5 million — John Hopkins University

BEIJING, July 23 — The following are the updates on the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, reported Xinhua news agency.

NEW YORK — Global confirmed Covid-19 cases topped 15 million on Wednesday, reaching 15,008,046 as of 12.35 pm (1635 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

A total of 617,902 people worldwide have died of the disease, the data showed.

HOUSTON — The US state of Texas on Wednesday reported 197 Covid-19 deaths, a record high since the pandemic started this spring.

According to Texas Health and Human Services, as of Wednesday, the Covid-19 death toll reached 4,348. The state also reported nearly 10,000 newly confirmed cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number to 351,618.

BRASILIA — Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro again tested positive for the novel coronavirus, indicating he must remain in isolation, the president’s office said on Wednesday.

Following his third positive test, taken on Tuesday, the office in Brasilia issued a statement saying the head of state was nevertheless “in good condition.”

GENEVA — United Nations agencies launched on Wednesday a database of laws that countries had implemented in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to help protect the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

The Covid-19 Law Lab initiative gathers and shares legal documents from over 190 countries across the world to help them establish and implement strong legal frameworks to manage the pandemic, according to a statement issued by the World Health Organisation.

JERUSALEM — Israel’s Ministry of Health recorded 2,043 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, raising the total number in the country to 56,085.

This is the biggest daily increase since the outbreak in Israel in late February after the previous record of 2,039 was reported on Tuesday.

SANTIAGO — Chile on Wednesday reported 336,402 Covid-19 cases and 8,722 deaths from the disease after tests detected 1,741 new cases of infection in the past 24 hours and 45 more patients died.

Of the newly detected cases, 1,391 presented symptoms and 238 were asymptomatic.

WARSAW — Poland’s health ministry on Wednesday reported three possible Covid-19 hotspots, including a convent, a hotel and a mine, a day after daily cases in the country hit over one-month high.

The ministry reported 380 new cases on Wednesday, slightly down from Tuesday’s 399, which was the highest number in over a month. In total, the ministry registered 41,162 infections and 1,642 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

NAIROBI — Kenya on Wednesday received a batch of anti-pandemic medical supplies from the Chinese government through the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development to help mothers and children combat Covid-19.

The Chinese embassy entrusted by China’s first lady, Peng Liyuan, handed over various medical supplies to Angella Githere-Langat, Coordinator of Kenyan First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s Beyond Zero Initiative.
