2020 Selangor Golf Classic aims to promote amateur golfers, domestic tourism

SHAH ALAM, Aug 14 — About 100 amateur golfers are set to tee off in the inaugural 2020 Selangor Golf Classic from Sept 29-30 as the state seeks to revive its domestic tourism industry.

The tournament, a collaboration between Tourism Selangor and Liberty Golf Services, aims to promote domestic tourism in the state under its ‘Pusing Selangor Dulu’ campaign, which is targeting six million tourists this year.

Tourism Selangor general manager Azrul Shah Mohamad said that having collected RM21.8 million in tourism taxes last year, it was making sports tourism, especially golf, a selling point under its Covid-19 recovery phase.

“Selangor is the premier golf hub in the country as it has 29 golf clubs around the state, which is the highest in the country. Local and expatriate golfers, as well as those from the government and corporate bodies, are expected to play in the tournament.

“Apart from creating a platform for amateur golfers to hone their skills, it will also help us revive our tourism industry and the state’s economy,” he said at a press conference to announce the tournament and unveil the trophy here yesterday.

The first round of the 36-hole, two-day tournament will be played at the Mines Resort and Golf Club in Seri Kembangan. The final round will be held at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club in Kota Kemuning.

Liberty Golf Services general manager Eushen Ng said participants would also have a chance to play an optional round at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Shah Alam and take home RM1,200 worth of goodies when they sign up with a registration fee of RM999.

“We are hoping to make this as an annual tournament and turn it into an international event by attracting foreign golfers from next year, which will contribute to the country’s tourism sector,” he said.
