HULU SELANGOR, April 27 — The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election will see a four-cornered fight featuring Pakatan Harapan (Harapan), Perikatan Nasional (PN), Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) and one independent candidate.

Harapan will be represented by activist and producer Pang Sock Tao while PN is fielding its Hulu Selangor Bersatu acting division chief Khairul Azhari Saut.

PRM, meanwhile, is represented by Hafizah Zainudin. The sole independent candidate is Nyau Ke Xin.

The names of the candidates were confirmed by returning officer Yuhanas Auree Kamaruddin at 10.35am today, after nomination was closed at 10am.

“We received nomination papers from four individuals. I have checked them and am satisfied to announce that none were rejected,” he said at the nomination centre at Hulu Selangor Multipurpose Hall and District Sports Complex, here, today.

Earlier, hundreds of Unity Government supporters clad in red gathered near the nomination centre here to show their support for Pang.

Among those present were Selangor Menteri Besar and Selangor Harapan chairman Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Harapan election director for Kuala Kubu Baharu Ng Sze Han.

Pang, 31, filed her nomination at 9.07am accompanied by her proposer, Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Hulu Selangor division member S. Srikanth, and seconder, Umno’s Hulu Selangor division member Amin Hussen.

She was announced as the Unity Government candidate on April 24. She was among 10 shortlisted female candidates to represent Harapan in the poll.

Loke had said then that Pang was chosen due to her political experience and strong career in public service.

PN, meanwhile, announced Azhari’s candidature on April 25.

With nomination out of the way, the 14-day campaigning period officially begins and will end at 11.59pm on May 10.

The Election Commission (EC) has set May 11 as polling day, with early voting scheduled for May 7.

According to the latest electoral roll by EC, Kuala Kubu Baharu has 40,226 registered voters consisting of 39,362 ordinary voters, 625 policemen, 238 military personnel and spouses, and one overseas absentee voter.

The by-election was triggered following the death of its incumbent Lee Kee Hiong on March 21. Lee was a three-term Kuala Kubu Baharu assemblyman.

In the last state election in August last year, Lee won the seat with a 4,119 majority, garnering 14,862 total votes against PN’s Teoh Kien Hong (10,743 votes), Muda’s R. Siva Prakash (1,186 votes), and PRM’s Chng Boon Lai (527 votes).
