SEPANG, Oct 5 — Selangor has directed the Department of Environment (DOE), the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, and the Negeri Sembilan Water Regulatory Body to conduct further investigations into the location believed to have caused the odour pollution in Sungai Semenyih and Sungai Langat.

State Environment, Green Technology, Science and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the focus is currently on the Nilai Industrial Area 3 as a specific location of the source of pollution has yet to be identified.

“They are currently investigating the area involved. It is difficult for Selangor authorities to conduct our own investigations because it is beyond state boundaries.

“We hope Negeri Sembilan would take the initiative to investigate the cause of this incident. Elements of sabotage will also be investigated,” Hee said at the press conference at Tasik Idaman here today.

Aside from having the DOE take stern action against those that breach the Environmental Quality Act 1974, Hee said a police report will also be lodged on the incident.

Yesterday, the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi Water Treatment Plants had to cease operations following the odour pollution reeking of carcasses detected at the two Selangor rivers.

Some 309, 687 account holders in 274 areas in the districts of Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang were hit with unscheduled water cuts.
