SHAH ALAM, Nov 15 — The success of the Selangor government’s aim towards digitalisation and in becoming a smart state by 2025 is highly dependent on internet connectivity in the state.

State executive councillor for entrepreneur development Rodziah Ismail said efforts to improve the internet connection in the state will be given much focus next year to ensure the people of Selangor has access to a fast internet connection.

“We will not succeed in having a digitalised and smart society if we have poor internet connectivity, therefore the state government would have to face the challenge in fulfilling this.

“Internet connection is a daily necessity which is as essential as other utilities,” she said in a recent talk show programme with Media Selangor.

The 2021 Selangor Budget has allocated RM17.5 million for the WiFi and Selangor Internet Data initiative which aims to benefit about 54,000 users.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had previously said the programme focuses on the students, single mothers and those in the lower-income groups to ensure the digitalisation agenda reaches the general public.

He said the WiFi hotspots will also be rearranged to focus on residential areas, health, sports and education institutions, community centres, and transportation hubs.

To date, over 3,600 Smart Selangor WiFi hotspots exist.
