SHAH ALAM, Nov 1 — Selangor people make up the largest number of consumers on e-commerce services last year, says the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

The department said the statistics were obtained from a survey conducted on eight million households nationwide in 2019.

The data shows 2.22 million households from Selangor spent through e-commerce platforms over the past year followed by Johor (984,000), Penang (736,000), Perak (712,000) and Kuala Lumpur (648,000).

It is followed by Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka, Pahang, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Kedah, Putrajaya, Perlis and Labuan.

“As for spending according to race, Bumiputeras led with 4.69 million households or 58.7 per cent, followed by Chinese (2.09 million), Indians (680,000) and others (528,000),” Kosmo! Online portal reported, citing the statistics shared by DOSM yesterday.

Based on the same survey, DOSM found clothing and footwear to be among the most popular items bought by Malaysians through related platforms or online shopping portals.

“A total of 744,000 households nationwide bought the goods last year,” said DOSM.

It is followed by a variety of goods and services; decoration, tools and home maintenance, and communications.

The department revealed that households spending on goods and services through e-commerce platforms increased from 11.3 per cent in 2016 to 23.3 per cent last year.
