Camping experience at top of Gunung Machincang in Langkawi

LANGKAWI, Jan 2 — Gunung Machincang, a popular tourist spot for its steepest cable car ride in the world, is set to offer tourists another exciting experience through its camping programme at an altitude of 708 metres above sea level at the top of the mountain.

Panorama Langkawi Sdn Bhd (PLSB) chief operating officer, Rohizat Hashim said through the ‘One Night @ 708m Machincang Mountain’ programme, visitors can enjoy camping at the South Platform, one of the two platforms located at the top of the mountain.

He said PLSB, the operator of Langkawi SkyCab had organised three series of trials of the programme which was expected to be launched in the middle of this month, including on the eve of 2021 involving 40 participants.

“As an alternative (to generate income) for Langkawi SkyCab, the management came up with the idea to give visitors the opportunity to spend the night at the top of Gunung Machincang for a mere RM150.

“Through this programme, visitors can soak in the beauty of Langkawi from the top of the mountain in addition to enjoying the sunset and sunrise which will definitely be an exciting experience,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Rohizat said PLSB, a subsidiary of the Langkawi Development Authority, plans to hold the programme twice a month on weekends and public holidays.

Tourist guide, Zaidi Mohamad, 48, said having the opportunity to spend the night at the top of Mount Machincang on the eve of 2021 was a wonderful experience for him.

“To be able to watch the sunrise and sunset whilst enjoying the cool Andaman sea breeze was an amazing experience.

“It is also a well-filled programme. Participants helped each other to set up tents and we couldn’t have asked for a more sumptuous meal and breakfast. I will definitely promote this to tourists who come to Langkawi,” Zaidi said adding that he was confident that the programme would be well-received.

Housewife, Azizah Mohd Isa, 38, who took part in the programme together with her husband and son said she had an opportunity not to be missed.

“I have hiked to the top of Mount Machinchang before so when I heard PLSB had opened the participation, the whole family submitted our names because we knew it would be an amazing experience.

“t was a really exciting experience. You could enjoy a gorgeous view from the top of this mountain. Last night the wind was strong, but it didn’t matter. I will join again in the future,” said Azizah.
