KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 — The number of active Covid-19 cases in Malaysia has drawn closer to 30,000 after 2,232 new cases were reported today, with Selangor still leading in daily figures, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
He said Selangor reported 557 new cases (25 per cent of daily total), with 404 cases (72.5 per cent) from clusters and screening of close contacts in the field.
“This is followed by Johor with 396 cases (17.7 per cent) and Sabah with 374 cases (16.8 per cent).
“The new cases today have pushed the cumulative figure for Covid-19 positive cases in Malaysia to 138,224, while the total number for active cases is 28,554,” he said in a statement today.
Dr Noor Hisham said six of the new cases were imported while 2,226 were local transmissions, involving 1,769 Malaysians (79.5 per cent) and the rest foreigners.
These three states with the most daily cases are among six states to be placed under the movement control order (MCO) for two weeks beginning Wednesday (January 12).
Dr Noor Hisham said 194 (8.7 per cent) of the cases reported were related to clusters at lock-ups, immigration detention depots and prisons, involving the Tembok Choh (157 cases), Jalan Harapan Prison (20), Tembok Gajah (12) and Pagar Siput (five) clusters.
He said four fatalities were reported today, raising the death toll to 555.
Three deaths were reported in Selangor and one was from Sabah, with the victims aged between 47 and 56.
“A total of 187 positive cases are still being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), with 87 requiring ventilators,” he added.
He said 1,006 cases had recovered today, bringing the cumulative figure for recoveries to 109,115, or 78.9 per cent of the total number of cases.
The Health Ministry (MOH) also detected eight new clusters, raising the number of active clusters to 258, with 68 clusters reporting an increase in cases today.
The new clusters are Jalan Keluli cluster in Johor with 42 cases, Medan Idaman cluster (Kuala Lumpur – 10 cases), Jelita cluster (Sarawak – eight), Kampung Renok cluster (Kelantan – 23), Kampung Geting cluster (Kelantan – 11), Kubang Bujuk cluster (Terengganu – 10), Lumut Barat cluster (Perak – 11) and Kejaya cluster (Terengganu – nine).
The clusters which reported the most new cases are Tembok Choh (157 cases), Teratai (83) and Beringin (48), he said.
Dr Noor Hisham said the implementation of the MCO in six states, as announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin this evening, is consistent with the government’s proactive measure to break the Covid-19 chain of infection in Malaysia.
He said the ministry welcomed the announcement, which also involved states placed under the conditional movement control order (CMCO) and recovery movement control order (RMCO) for 14 days until January 26.
