Infant seriously injured in monkey attack

BUTTERWORTH, Jan 11 — A 50-day-old baby was seriously injured after being bitten by a monkey at the family residence in Kampung Manggis, Sungai Puyu here last Saturday.

Seberang Perai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said at the time of the 2.15 pm incident, the baby boy was sleeping in the living room while his mother was in the kitchen.

“All the doors and windows were shut, and upon hearing his cries, the infant’s mother found the floor covered with blood.

“A male monkey was seen next to the baby before it fled,” he told Bernama today.

She then found bites marks on the baby’s head, stomach and cheeks, before rushing him to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.

Noorzainy said the baby was transferred to Penang Hospital, and on the same day, doctors performed surgery.

“The infant will be hospitalised for at least two weeks,” he added.

He said preliminary investigations found that monkey had been spotted before in the neighbourhood, but this was the first time it had attacked someone.

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has been informed of the incident, he said.
