SHAH ALAM, Jan 2 — The Kuala Selangor District Council (MDKS) has the potential to change its status to a municipal council this year, said state executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han.

However, he said the local authority (PBT) must focus on improving its services to the people.

“Since last year, MDKS has been waiting to change its status to a municipality. I am confident that this year, it is possible for MDKS to change its status from the district council to the municipal council.

“But it needs to be reminded, to not just pursue the status. Instead, their quality of services must be improved so that their aim could be achieved,” he told SelangorKini.

He said this following announcement by MDKS president that the PBT is expected to get municipal council status this year.

Ng said the matter is in the final phase of gazetting and is being reviewed by the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT).

In August last year, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari informed that MDKS still awaits the green light from KPKT on its status change from the district council to the municipality, aside from reviewing several criteria including on population, income and revenue.

So far Selangor has three city councils which are Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya.

It is followed by six municipalities, namely Selayang, Ampang Jaya, Klang, Kajang, Kuala Langat and Sepang.

Meanwhile, the district council, are Hulu Selangor, Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor.
