Mother, daughter fined RM1,000 for injuring teenage girl

KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 — A mother and daughter were each fined RM1,000 by the Selayang Magistrate’s Court here today for injuring a 16-year-old girl, last month.

Magistrate Nik Mohd Fadli Nik Azlan meted out the sentence on S G Saroja, 53, and her daughter C Sathiyawathy, 31, after they pleaded guilty to committing the offence.

The court also ordered Saroja who is also the victim’s aunt and Sathiyawathy to serve two months in jail if they failed to pay the fine.

The duo, together with another person still at large, were charged with voluntarily causing hurt on the girl at an area near Bulatan Beringin Selayang, here, at 11pm on March 1.

The charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.

Earlier, in mitigation, lawyer M Mariappan, from the National Legal Aid Foundation, representing the mother and daughter pleaded for leniency saying that the incident occurred due to misunderstandings over family issues, adding that his clients also regretted their action.

Deputy public prosecutor Khairunnisak Hassni appeared for the prosecution.
