SHAH ALAM, April 25 — Shoppers who are spotted using the reusable bags distributed by the Selangor government, or known as Bagus, when shopping at the markets or grocery stores will stand a chance to receive a special reward.

State executive councillor for consumer affairs Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said the incentive is to encourage more people to depend less on plastic use.

“We found that a lot of the people would just keep the reusable bags at home instead of using it.

“Therefore, we have prepared some rewards and surprises for the shoppers that make use of the reusable bags,” he said after distributing the Bagus reusable bags at the night market in Kampung Jalan Kebun, here yesterday.

On April 4, the Bagus initiative was launched as part of the awareness campaign on the importance of conserving the environment by ditching plastic bags. The programme aims for a total of 10,000 bags to be distributed to the people across Selangor.

Mohd Zawawi said some 2,000 bags have already been handed out to those in Kuala Selangor and Klang while the remaining 8,000 will be fully distributed by the local authorities and community heads within a month’s time.

“We will distribute it the soonest possible seeing that the consumers are shopping actively during Ramadan for the Hari Raya festival,” he said.
