12 target groups to benefit from free internet data programme

SHAH ALAM, August 14 — A total of 12 targeted groups in Selangor are expected to benefit from the Selangor Internet Data (SID) initiative, says Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI digitalisation chief Kamarul Nizam Kassim.

He said the recipients come from various backgrounds including students, farmers, small traders, online traders, e-hailing workers, youths and single mothers.

Kamarul Nizam added those who would also receive benefits from the initiative are village heads, Orang Asli as well as members of mosque and surau committee comprising nazir, imam and siak.

“Giving these groups the SIM card will allow them to get free internet access, we hope this assistance will make things easier to them, for example, to study and do business.

“In fact, we have received tens of thousands of responses since the application for the SID programme was opened a few weeks ago, the response has been very encouraging,” he said.

He said this during Media Selangor’s Bual Bicara virtual talk show titled ‘Internet Data for Selangor Citizen’ aired live on Media Selangor’s Facebook page and SelangorTV Youtube channel last night.

To achieve its target for the initiative, he said MBI has collaborated with several agencies including the Kolej Universiti Islam Selangor, Universiti Selangor and the Selangor State Technical Skills Development Center.

“These agencies have the data on students so it helps with the distribution, while for traders we work with the state executive councillor for entrepreneur development, Hijrah Selangor and local council (PBT),” he said.

On August 4, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced the Selangor Internet Data initiative that will benefit 70,000 people in Selangor.

The RM17.5 million initiative, which is also part of the Kita Selangor Package 2.0, is fully funded by MBI.

MBI will bear a subsidy of RM20 through the offer of an unlimited internet data SIM card with a special monthly subscription rate of RM35.
