Explosion near Kabul airport resulted in ‘unknown number of casualties’

WASHINGTON, Aug 27 — The explosion outside the Kabul airport has resulted in an unknown number of casualties, Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said on Thursday.

“We can confirm that the explosion near the Abbey Gate of the Kabul airport has resulted in an unknown number of casualties. We will continue to update,” Kirby said on Twitter as reported by Sputnik.

Earlier reports said that it was a suicide blast with small arms gunfire heard around the airport premises.

The news agency quoting Politico reported that a suicide bomber from the Islamic State terror group (banned in Russia) is responsible for the explosion outside the airport.

The report comes as US officials and media have warned about a heightened threat coming from the Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-Khorasan), which is a branch of the main terror group operating mainly in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
