Farmers, breeders get RM3.4 mln in assistance

BANDAR BARU BANGI, Oct 8 — The state government has spent a total of RM3.4 million from the Kita Selangor 2.0 Package to help farmers and breeders who are affected by Covid-19.

State executive councillor for agriculture Ir Izham Hashim said the amount includes money used under the Agro Prihatin Selangor initiative that will buy up any surplus of fruits and vegetables from farmers, especially in situations of glut.

“I no longer hear any more news regarding a surplus of agricultural produce. The situation has stabilised and the farmers can now focus on increasing their yield,” he said after visiting the Community Farm in Section 8 Prima, here, yesterday.

At the farm, Izham, who was accompanied by the Hulu Langat District Officer Dr Ani Ahmad and the Sungai Ramal state representative, Mazwan Johar, handed over aquaculture food vouchers to 39 fish breeders from the Hulu Langat district.

The food vouchers were made possible by the Kita Selangor 2.0 Package and serve to ease the burden of the fish breeders, following a hike in livestock price.

“The fish breeders in Selangor have received assistance in the form of fish food and fertilisers, the fishermen have petrol subsidies and the cattle farmers were given feed for their ruminants,” he said.

On Jun 9, the state government had allocated over RM13 million to help farmers and breeders who were affected by the movement control order.

The Kita Selangor 2.0 Package allocates RM10 million for the state’s food security programme, RM1.5 million for the Agro Prihatin Programme and RM1.93 million to ensure that farmers and breeders increase their production.
