‘Akad nikah’ now allowed at all state mosques, suraus

SHAH ALAM, Nov 1 — All mosques and suraus in the state are allowed to perform the ‘akad nikah’ (marriage solemnisation) ceremony from today, subject to conditions.

The new rules allow only six akad nikah ceremonies a day — three in the morning and three in the afternoon, said the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director.

The number of guests is set at 20 people — 10 from the groom’s side and 10 from the bride’s.

“Everyone present must have already completed two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine,” said Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad in a statement today.

Meanwhile, he said that mosques and suraus are also now allowed to manage and perform the cleansing ritual for the bodies of the deceased who are not victims of Covid-19.

Immediate family members and parishioners not exceeding 100 people can be present.

Committee meetings and annual general meetings for mosques and suraus are also permitted, as is celebratory meals to welcome guest speakers.

“Members of the congregation will get food packets,” he added.
