Domestic tourism healing, staycation in full swing

PETALING JAYA, Dec 10 — Hotels throughout Selangor received encouraging responses from staycation-goers since the tourism sector reopens in October.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said most of the people in the state took advantage of the weekend by staying at hotels to support the local tourism sector.

“We have seen an increase in staycations in hotels in Selangor in the last three months. We believe the number will increase over time.

“However, the actual number of visitors to hotels and state tourist spots will only be available in the first quarter of next year,” he said at a press conference after launching the Tourism Selangor Global Convention 2021 (TSGC 2021) here today.

Also present were state executive councillor for tourism Hee Loy Sian, Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Azrul Shah Mohamad and ‘Pusing Selangor Dulu’ campaign ambassador Juliana Evans.

Commenting further, Amirudin said the main concern was the method of ensuring that foreign tourists coming to Selangor had been vaccinated when the country’s border is opened.

“So far, we are confident as more than 95 per cent of Malaysians have been vaccinated and that has helped calm down the situation. That is why we focus on domestic tourism,” he said.

Starting from October 11, the government had allowed interstate travel to individuals who have been fully vaccinated.

The decision was made after the country’s adult vaccination rate reached 90 per cent.
