Ikhtiar Selangor Bangkit programme provides various benefits to flood victims

SHAH ALAM, Dec 29 —The Ikhtiar Selangor Bangkit initiative provides various assistance to flood victims who were affected by the disaster caused by continuous heavy downpour two weeks ago.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said among the assistance included a one-month exemption of the water bill and a two-month moratorium for Hijrah borrowers.

Apart from that, the state government has also established a special fund to help flood victims, disbursed RM10,000 cash aid to the families of flood victims who perished in the incident and RM1,000 cash aid to the heads of families.

“The flooding incident is a once in 100 years occurrence, however, this is not an excuse for me and my administration to neglect our responsibilities to do the best for the people.

“I apologise and I promise to try my best to ensure the citizens of Selangor will not experience the same sad episode again,” he said in a video clip shared on his Twitter.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said the flooding has affected most of the areas in Selangor with 450 millimetres of rainfall recorded in a day, exceeding the expectation and resulting in several localities being submerged.

Following the incident, he said almost 40,000 residents were affected and transferred to 205 temporary relief centres (PPS) in eight districts throughout the state.

“Every year, we prepare for the rainy season, in fact, the state agencies have issued warning notices since October, however, no one could have predicted that a torrential rain in one-day duration would produce the same amount of rainfall in a month,” he added.
