KDEBWM: Major operation in Hulu Langat to clear flood debris

By Amin Ridzuan Ishak

SHAH ALAM, Dec 27 — A large-scale operation to collect garbage and flood waste in several affected areas in Hulu Langat has begun, and will run for two days until tomorrow.

KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) managing director Ramli Mohd Tahir said the cleanup team is now actively carrying out work in Taman Sri Nanding, before moving to several locations up to Sungai Lui which was badly affected by the disaster.

As part of the operation, he said an application was made to the police to close the main route to Hulu Langat for vehicles, from 8am to 12noon during the two-day period.

“We hope the public will cooperate in ensuring the movement of bulk waste lorries to the evacuation station at Batu 14 and Sungai Serai is smooth, since we want to conduct as many trips as possible to speed up the cleaning process.

“Previously we faced difficulties due to the presence of many outsider vehicles along with narrow roads that limited the movement of the lorries,” Ramli said when met at his office here today.

He added that more than 50 KDEBWM machines were mobilised in the large-scale operation, including the Roll-On-Roll-Off (RoRo) lorries as well as excavators and backhoes to speed up the cleaning work.

He said the movement of machinery installed by the vehicle monitoring system will be monitored at the control centre, located at the KDEBWM Headquarters here.

“We can see the real-time movement of the vehicles involved, to facilitate planning and launch operations,” he said.

The solid waste management company wholly owned by the state government has been cleaning up flood-affected areas in several districts since December 19 in stages.

Several settlements in Hulu Langat were among the locations severely affected by the floods that saw some homes destroyed in the disaster.
