SHAH ALAM, May 30 — The MCIS Life-Malaysia Women Marathon (MCIS Life-MWM) 2022 attracted 1,000 runners in the sports tourism event yesterday.

Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Azrul Shah Mohamad said the event held at Padang Timur, in Section 2, Petaling Jaya, had received an encouraging response after a two-year pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Sports tourism is part of our focus in promoting domestic tourism.

“The event’s theme is aligned with the ‘Pusing Selangor’ campaign whereby the locals are welcomed to explore interesting places in Selangor,” he said.

The event was launched by MCIS Life Distribution and Marketing head Ragunath Murthy. Also present were state executive councillor for tourism Hee Loy Sian and Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir.

Meanwhile, in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the run, MWM Run founder and director Karen Loh said for the first time, male participants were allowed to register for the 21-kilometre half marathon (km) and 42-km full marathon categories.

“This marks our decade-long history as men play an equally important role in gender equality issues and women empowerment,” she said.

The first-place winner for the 42 km women’s open category goes to Loh Chooi Fern, while Ewe Bee Hong won the women’s veteran category and Muhaizar Mohamad bagged the men’s category.

Meanwhile, Noor Amelia Musa topped the women’s 21 km open category, Lee Siok Chin won the women’s veteran category, and Elvis Kyalo Kisav took the first spot in the men’s 22 km category.

The champion of the tournament series will represent the country at Sydney Marathon in Hyde Park, Sydney, Australia, on September 18.

MCIS Life-MWM 2022 in Petaling Jaya was the start of the tournament, and the next series will be held in Ipoh and Johor later this year.
