SHAH ALAM, July 25 — Some 80,000 people in Selangor have benefitted from the Jualan Prihatin Rakyat initiative, which offers fresh goods at lower prices compared to the market.

State executive councillor for agriculture Izham Hashim said the programme, which is the main event under the Ehsan Food Prices Intervention Programme, began in February this year.

“It is part of the state government effort to ensure the that people in Selangor have access to fresh goods at affordable prices, especially during the festive seasons.

“The programme also aimed to control the prices of items such as chicken and eggs through the employment of ideas such as subsidies, rent reduction and logistical support on the strategic supply chain,” said Izham in response to a query from Kampung Tunku state assemblyman Lim Yi Wei on plans by the state government to address the issue of a chicken shortage during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, here today.

Izham said that the programme also provides other supplies including frozen fish, meat and cooking oil, all of which were sold at 60 different locations across the state.

The Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) initiative, which offers food items at a 20–25 per cent discount, has shown that the state administration is able to combat the rising cost of raw materials, which was putting a pressure on the people.

On May 19, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari stated that since the Ehsan Food Prices Intervention Programme’s introduction in December of last year in more than 50 places throughout the state, up to 60,000 people have benefited form the initiative.

The Jualan Prihatin Rakyat project aims to lessen people’s burdens and offers the opportunity to buy enough fresh goods, such as poultry, fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables.
