Sukma 2022: Fierce competition, lack of experience did not break spirit in chasing for gold

By Siti Rohaizah Zainal

SHAH ALAM, Sept 20 — Even though facing fierce competition in the women’s 200m race yesterday, it did not stop state athlete Nur Afrina Batrisyia Mohamad Rizal from winning gold at the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma).

However, the 18-year-old, confessed that it was not an easy competition as she faced tough competition against top athletes, especially for someone who has no experience in international games.

“My opponents for this match were great athletes with amazing track records. They were fierce competitors, but my coach gave me the utmost reassurance that I can do it.

“I was determined to do my best and eventually won gold by speeding up at the very last minute of the race and finished in 24.83 seconds,” she told SelangorKini.

Hailing from Kuala Langat, Nur Afrina wishes to make her achievement in this Sukma a strong motivator to continue striving in the field she has chosen.

“I will be joining the SEA Games in Cambodia next year and aim to bring home gold for the national contingent,” she adds.

The 20th Sukma, which was delayed for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is happening from September 16 to 24. It involves 490 athletes and 75 coaches in 30 different sporting events.

Selangor eyes the top three spots with a target of 40 golds, 40 silvers, and 45 bronze medals. The swimming event and athletics event is still set to bring in the most medals.
