Selangor looks to strengthen dam resistance during floods — Exco

SEPANG, Oct 21 — The Selangor government is looking for solutions to strengthen river dams’ resilience during major floods, similar to what happened last year.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and public utilities Izham Hashim said he asked the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) to carry out a more comprehensive study on how to further raise existing bunds.

“There are similar cases in several areas, but it will be carried out in stages, prioritising the more serious areas first.

“The bund is very long in Selangor, so naturally the maintenance costs are high. Hence, we will keep an eye on spots where it is constantly collapsing,” he said.

Izham was speaking during his field visit to inspect the installation of geo bags at Sungai Semenyih, near Sungai Buah Luar yesterday.

The bunds in the area were affected by the floods that hit Selangor in December last year.

He said the current bund improvement project was initiated with the Federal government’s RM2.5 million allocation, with the state government providing additional allocations as well.

“Now we wait for the study to be completed as we are uncertain of the costs,” Izham said, adding they are now in the process of identifying landowners to attain permission for the project.
