KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — The unemployment rate in Malaysia dropped by 0.1 per cent to 3.6 per cent in September 2022 compared to 3.7 per cent the previous month, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
It said in a statement today that the number of unemployed also continued to record a downward trend for 14 consecutive months to 605,000 people in September 2020 compared to 612,000 the previous month.
The unemployment rate dropped to 3.7 per cent to 611,800 people in the third quarter of 2022, which is the lowest since the Covid-19 pandemic in the second quarter of 2020.
The number of active unemployed recorded a drop of 2.1 per cent to 496,600 people in September compared to 507,300 people in August.
According to the DOSM, the labour force in the country rose by 0.2 per cent to 16.66 million people in September compared to 16.63 people the previous month, with the labour force participation rate remaining at 69.7 per cent.
Meanwhile, the working population continued to increase by 0.2 per cent to 16.05 million people in September compared to 16.02 million people the previous month.
The composition of the largest working population is the employee category, at 75.9 per cent, self-employed (17.6 per cent), employers (3.4 per cent) and unpaid family workers (3.1 per cent).
For the outside labour force, it recorded a slight drop of 0.04 per cent to 7.24 million people, with 42.9 per cent of the total comprising those in the category of housework or family responsibilities while 40.5 per cent are in the category of school or training.
