SHAH ALAM, Nov 17 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has visited the flood-affected areas in Taman Melawis, Klang, to oversee the situation at 2am today.

He said the water pump at Taman Melawis was well-functioning but heavy rains caused the water to overflow and flood the nearby housing areas.

“I am now at Taman Melawis water pump at 2am. The pumps are operating well at this moment. However, high rainfall caused water to overflow into the housing areas. I have instructed the relevant authorities to provide immediate assistance to the affected residents.

“I surveyed the flood situation at 2.45am along with the Klang Municipal Council president, Drainage and Irrigation Department personnel and the residents’ association. The flood mitigation project has commenced but is facing several issues.

“I will contact Keretapi Tanah Melayu tomorrow to resolve this matter,” he said in a series of tweets posted on Twitter, earlier this morning.

Bernama reporterd that continuous heavy rain around the Klang Valley since last night has affected several districts in Selangor, including Sepang, Hulu Langat, Petaling and Klang.

The Selangor Civil Defence Force (APM) Disaster Management Committee Secretariat stated that seven temporary evacuation centres (PPS) have been opened since early this morning to accommodate more than 800 people from 200 families.

On November 11, Amirudin criticised the dissolution of parliament to pave the way for the 15th general election during the monsoon season and described it as a mistake.

He said that the impending floods would impact both the victims and district officers who are involved in the election.
