SUBANG JAYA, Feb 5 — Close to 1,000 visitors took part in the Subang Jaya City Council’s (MBSJ) Car-Free Day @ Selamat Pagi Subang Jaya event, in front of Aeon Big Subang Jaya supermarket this morning.

Selangor State Deputy Secretary (Development) Datuk Johary Anuar said the programme, which ran from 7am to 11 am, was the seventh such event since it was launched in August last year.

For this time, MBSJ’s Car-Free Day featured several additional activities, including the 100-kilometre Endurance Challenge (bicycle), and a push bike tournament meant for children under the age of six.

“The cycling competition drew in 200 participants, who had to cover the set distance within three hours. The push bike event saw 50 children take part in it.

“Asides from these activities, MBSJ also organised the Eco Free Market, a competition by buskers, the Street Soccer Piala Datuk Bandar football competition, a leisure run, a food festival, and a lucky draw,” he said at the event.

Johary, the most recent former Subang Jaya mayor, said he hopes the council will continue to carry out the Car-Free Day, due to its numerous benefits to the community.

The programme takes place on the first Sunday of every month, as part of the efforts to make Subang Jaya a low-carbon city by 2030.

Meanwhile, Subang Jaya Deputy Mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali said close to 2,000 traders will operate during the Ramadan fasting month this year in bazaars under MBSJ’s jurisdiction.

He said a total of 26 locations, including four new sites, will operate in 2023 and which will sell various iftar dishes.

“The period to apply for bazaar permits is now closed. However in the event a vacancy is available, we will inform traders so they can generate income.

“MBSJ also welcomes any efforts by supermarkets and shopping centres to organise their own bazaars, making it easier for people and providing a wider variety of choices to buy food,” Mohd Zulkurnain said.

The Ramadan bazaars under MBSJ this year encompasses five zones, namely Subang Jaya, Kinrara, Puchong, Putra Heights, and Serdang/Seri Kembangan.
